The original post is about how a company integrated its offshore development team using AccuRev software. If you have constructive feedback or your own experiences, please feel free to share them with the community. As always, we reserve the right to delete comments that primarily take shots at competitive products.

Thank you for your understanding.

Kal,

I couldn't agree with you more. After dealing with the Serena support for a couple of years and getting nowhere we actually came off support and now manage the system ourselves. This was a major reason for us not wanting to consider the "upgrade to the latest Dimensions" route.

we faced similar problems with our scm - perforce, but a lot of that has been addresses thanks to intellij's perforce plugin which now supports offline mode

I wish the speed of my SCM was the most important thing when it came to development, but have you ever dealt with Serena support or tried to get Dimensions running in less than a month? See you at the monster mash. What a nightmare.

Thought you might be interested to know that Serena spent a significant development effort addressing the WAN performance issues mentioned in this article and the results have been stunning: WAN performance in the latest release 10.1.3 is 20-fold faster than 9.x! It is also benchmarked as being several fold faster than SVN and 60 times faster than IBM ClearCase! Check out the announcement at
http://www.serena.com/pages/campaigns/landing-page512/index.html?Campaign_Id=26260&Activity_Id=10882

The key reasons for the improvements are two fold: (a) a new library cache feature is provided that removes the unnecessary transfer of files from the server to the clients (so a checkout in India against a central repository in US will not transfer files if they are already in a library cache in India), and (b) data and file transfers are sent in compressed packets which are then streamed directly to the client with minimum packet handshake.

I encourage you to try out the latest Dimensions 10.1.3 release. You will be pleasantly surprised with the scale of the WAN performance improvements.
